When the Killoe Men's Shed was established in 2017 as part of a GAA Healthy Club Project, we knew it would be a positive addition to the parish. It was the vision of our sadly deceased and beloved friend, Jim McGoldrick, who saw a need to combat social isolation as part of a Killoe GAA Healthy Club Project. However, the sheer impact these men have had on our community has exceeded all expectations.

Visiting the shed is a privilege; it is a place of warm hospitality where men of all ages can foster deep friendships. It brings together a unique blend of skills—from forestry and horticulture to carpentry—proving that with a bit of ingenuity and craftsmanship, everything doesn't have to be new or cost a fortune. They are the most resourceful men I've ever met.

The true magic of the Killoe Men's Shed, however, is their unwavering dedication to serving others & their community over the years. From assisting the local school, the defib group to helping the community development group, they have supported every local initiative with a smile. Reared in harder times, this generation possesses a deep gratitude, a calming presence, and a wonderful sense of humour. It is a space where people are actively encouraged to just be themselves. They have a wonderful mix of unique characters and personalities, and everyone is welcomed, respected and accepted exactly as they are. When I spend time with these men I hope my sons grow up to be like them- decent skillful content men. Whatever you give them, let it be furniture or a problem, they always have a solution.

Research indicates that a lack of social connection and chronic feelings of loneliness carry a health risk equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It is a severe public health threat, making it a greater mortality risk than physical inactivity or obesity. While the shed has been a comforting haven for its members especially following bereavement and retirement, it is safe to say our parish also has gained far more from them than they ever could have imagined. The project owes so much to the many people and their important members. The local community and County Council that have donated money & resources, their valuable time, support and the people that continue to maintain this important project. We look back with great fondness on the memories we share with our beloved, departed members & friends, may they rest in peace.

To anyone in the area that is interested in becoming a member, please reach out to one of the members. Membership costs are minimal and there usually is a calendar of upcoming events and outings planned for the year. There is a role for everyone or a simple chat and a cuppa on a Thursday evening if none of the projects interest you.
